Upgrading the PPT Software

Upgrading the PPT Software

This chapter provides the step-by-step procedure of upgrading the Policy Provisioning Tool (PPT) application using the GUI-based as well as the console-based installation wizard.
The user having administrative privileges can upgrade the existing PPT installation. The PPT upgrade is a wizard-based automated procedure in which the PPT installation file detects the previously installated version of the application. In case an older version of PPT software is installed, the installation wizard prompts a warning message stating that xx.x.xx.x version of this software is already installed on the system and whether or not you want to perform an upgrade.
note_smallImportant: The PPT software does not provide an automated mechanism to downgrade (reverting to an older software version of PPT from a newer one). However, the PPT administrator can achieve this by first uninstalling the existing PPT installation using the instructions provided in the Uninstalling the PPT Software chapter and then installing the required older version of PPT using the instructions provided in the Installing the PPT Software chapter of this guide.
Caution_iconCaution: Uninstalling the PPT removes all the database related files of PPT build being uninstalled. However the PPT backup files (which contain database dump and PPT configuration files and are created every mid-night by default) persist if their location is outside the installation directory. These PPT backup files have compatibility for the same PPT version/build and therefore cannot be used with newer or older PPT builds.
This chapter includes the following topics:

Unpacking the PPT Files
PPT installation package is distributed as a single zipped file with a “.zip” extension. Once the file is obtained, it must be copied to the PPT server and extracted.
Once the installation files package is copied to the server, follow the steps given below to extract the file:
Step 1
Step 2
unzip <file_name>.zip
The file_name is the name of the downloaded PPT installation file package. For Linux machine, the file name is ppt_<version_number>_rhel_x86.zip; and for Sun Solaris machine, the file name is ppt_<version_number>solaris_sparc.zip.
Extracting the zip file results into following two files:
Step 3

Performing the PPT Upgrade
This section provides the information and step-by-step instructions for performing the upgrade of PPT software as mentioned in the previous section of this chapter.

The Available PPT Upgrade Methods
The PPT and its supportive components, the Apache Web server and PostgreSQL database engine, can be upgraded using one of the following two methods:
GUI-based Upgrade: Requirements for the GUI-based installation/upgrade method include:
Console-based Upgrade: This method is available to all the users, specially for those who do not have an X-Windows client available for remote network connectivity to the PPT server via Telnet or SSH. However a Linux terminal is required with Telnet or SSH connectivity.

Upgrading PPT Using the GUI-based Installation Wzard
Follow the step-by-step instructions given below to upgrade the existing PPT installation using the GUI-based installation wizard.
Step 1
Step 2
./setup.bin
The PPT Installer dialog appears:
Step 3
Click Next to proceed. The system automatically checks for the already installed version of the PPT software. If an older version is installed, the following dialog box opens:
Step 4
Click Yes to proceed.
Step 5
Follow the on-screen prompts to progress through the various installation dialogs and configure the parameters as required. Refer the PPT Installation Parameter Descriptions table for descriptions of the configurable parameters on each of the installation dialogs.
Step 6
Click Done to exit the GUI-based installation wizard.
After the installation is complete, you can explore the PPT application by entering the following URL in the address bar of the browser in client machine:
https://<ip_address>:<port_number>/
where ip_address is the IP address of the machine where PPT server is installed and port_number is the port number to which apache is listening for the client requests. In case of the default port number, the port_number is also not required in the URL.
note_smallImportant: Please contact Cisco support for default Username and Password in order to login to the PPT application after installation.

Upgrading PPT Using the Console-based Installation Wizard
Follow the step-by-step instructions given below to upgrade the existing PPT software using the console-based installation wizard.
./setup.bin -i console
A series of messages appear, as following:
Extracting the JRE from the installer archive...
Unpacking the JRE...

Do you want to upgrade it? (Y/N):
Follow the on-screen prompts to progress through the various installation dialogs and configure the parameters as required. Refer to the table provided in the GUI-Based PPT Installation Wizard for descriptions of the configurable parameters on each of the installation dialogs.
On successful installation, the following messages appears on screen:

Installation log file "/PolicyProvisioning_InstallLog.log" can be viewed from the same location.
Start Policy Provisioning component as:
cd /users/<ppt_install_dir>
./pptctl start
./pptctl stop
After the installation is complete, you can explore the PPT application by entering the following URL in the address bar of the browser in client machine:
https://<ip_address>:<port_number>/
where ip_address is the IP address of the machine where PPT server is installed and port_number is the port number to which apache is listening for the client requests. In case of the default port, the port_numberis also not required in the URL
note_smallImportant: Please contact Cisco support for default Username and Password in order to login to the PPT application after installation.
